We buy houses in Eleanor, or connect you with a local buyer who will
Eleanor is a Putnam County town on the Kanawha River, a few miles downriver from Winfield. It started in 1934 as a New Deal resettlement community, one of three in West Virginia along with Arthurdale and Tygart Valley, and it's named for Eleanor Roosevelt. WV-62 runs through town on its way along the river toward Buffalo and Point Pleasant.
The first homes were built to a handful of similar designs, and locals still call them the old Eleanor houses. They're now around 90 years old, and many have been added on to over the years, so original wiring, plumbing, foundations and additions get a close look in a sale. Newer subdivisions and ranch homes fill in around the original streets.
If your house is in good shape, listing it with a local agent will often get you more, and we'll say so. If it needs work, has tenants, or came to you through an estate, UglyDuck may buy it ourselves or connect you with a trusted buyer from our network who works in Putnam County.

Selling in Eleanor: local things to know
Selling an original Eleanor house
Houses from the 1930s project share a basic plan, so a buyer familiar with them already knows where the usual issues are, such as old additions, aging chimneys, and the original electrical and plumbing. You don't need to fix or document any of it before reaching out. Just tell us what's been updated and what hasn't.
Town and county
Eleanor has its own town government for permits and local rules, while deeds and estates go through the Putnam County Clerk and County Commission in Winfield, a short drive away. George Washington Elementary and Middle School and the Putnam County Career and Technical Center are all in town.
Common reasons Eleanor owners reach out
A parent's original Eleanor home
Families often inherit an older house that hasn't been updated in decades. We can look at it with belongings still inside.
Additions that weren't permitted
Older add-ons without paperwork are common. Tell us about them. A buyer purchasing as-is can sort them out.
Downsizing to something smaller
If the yard and upkeep have become too much, describe the house and the timing that works for you.
How selling your Eleanor house works
- 1
Tell us about the house
Share the address, the condition and what's going on. It takes about a minute and costs nothing.
- 2
We take an honest look
We review the house and the area. We may make an offer ourselves, connect you with a trusted local buyer, or tell you listing is likely the better route.
- 3
You decide
If there's an offer, it comes in writing with the price and closing terms. Take your time, compare it with listing, and say no if it isn't right.
Selling your house in Eleanor: questions
Do you buy houses in Eleanor?
We look at houses throughout Eleanor and nearby Red House and Buffalo. We don't buy every house. Some we may buy ourselves and some we pass to a local buyer in our network.
Are the old Eleanor houses hard to sell?
Not usually. They're well known locally, and buyers who work on older homes know what to expect. Condition and updates matter more than age.
Should I list my Eleanor house instead?
If it's updated and in good shape, listing with an agent will often net more. Selling directly is worth comparing when the house needs major work or came through an estate.
