We buy houses in Alabaster, or connect you with a local buyer who will

Alabaster takes its name from the high-calcium limestone under the town, which the Alabaster Lime Company mined in the early 20th century. The city incorporated in 1953 and merged with neighboring Siluria in 1971. It sits in the Cahaba and Opossum valleys along US-31 and I-65, about 23 miles south of downtown Birmingham, and has its own city school system anchored by Thompson High School.

The older parts of Alabaster and Siluria have mill-era cottages, small frame houses and 1960s and 1970s brick ranches. Most of the city's growth since the 1990s came as subdivisions on either side of I-65. Older homes often need roofs, plumbing and foundation repairs, while some lots near Buck Creek and Beaverdam Creek sit in low ground with drainage or flood zone concerns.

If your house is in good shape, listing it with a local agent will often get you more, and we'll say so. If it needs work, has tenants, or came to you through an estate, UglyDuck may buy it ourselves or connect you with a trusted buyer from our network who works in Shelby County.

Selling in Alabaster: local things to know

Shelby County probate and taxes

Alabaster houses are recorded in Shelby County, whose probate court and revenue offices are in Columbiana. If a parent's house needs to be sold, the estate is opened there, and any unpaid property tax is paid through the same county.

Siluria's older blocks

The old Siluria community grew up around the Buck Creek cotton mill. Houses there are some of the oldest in the city, and they tend to need the most work, which makes them a natural fit for buyers who renovate.

Common reasons Alabaster owners reach out

An older Siluria house

If the house needs a new roof, rewiring or foundation work, you can sell it as-is and let the next owner handle the repairs.

A starter home you've outgrown

Moving up within Shelby County often means selling first. A simple sale without showings can make timing easier.

Water from Buck Creek

If your property has flooded or has standing water problems, disclose it and any insurance history. It doesn't rule out a sale.

How selling your Alabaster house works

  1. 1

    Tell us about the house

Share the address, the condition and what's going on. It takes about a minute and costs nothing.

  2. 2

    We take an honest look

We review the house and the area. We may make an offer ourselves, connect you with a trusted local buyer, or tell you listing is likely the better route.

  3. 3

    You decide

If there's an offer, it comes in writing with the price and closing terms. Take your time, compare it with listing, and say no if it isn't right.

Selling your house in Alabaster: questions

Do you buy houses in Alabaster and Siluria?

Yes, along with nearby Maylene and Saginaw. We don't buy every house. Some we may buy ourselves and some we pass to a local buyer in our network.

Can I sell an Alabaster rental with a tenant in it?

Often, yes. Share the lease terms and whether the tenant plans to stay.

Would an agent get me more for my Alabaster home?

For a house in good shape, usually yes. Our option is worth comparing when the house needs real repairs or you want to skip prep and showings.
