We buy houses in Homewood, or connect you with a local buyer who will

Homewood sits directly south of Birmingham on the far side of Red Mountain, in Shades Valley. Developers in the 1920s sold lots here with the slogan "Out of the Smoke Zone, Into the Ozone," and the Hollywood neighborhood still has the Spanish Colonial Revival and Tudor houses built during that boom. Samford University moved to its Homewood campus in 1957, and the SoHo district around 18th Street South is the city's walkable downtown.

Homewood is compact and built out, so most houses are older: 1920s and 1930s cottages in Edgewood and Hollywood, mid-century brick homes in West Homewood and Mayfair, and newer rebuilds scattered through every neighborhood. Small lots, original plaster, galvanized plumbing, and hillside foundations are routine findings. Shades Creek runs through the city, and some low-lying lots near it fall in mapped flood zones.

If your house is in good shape, listing it with a local agent will often get you more, and we'll say so. If it needs work, has tenants, or came to you through an estate, UglyDuck may buy it ourselves or connect you with a trusted buyer from our network who works in Jefferson County.

Selling in Homewood: local things to know

Hollywood Historic District

The Hollywood neighborhood, annexed into Homewood in 1929, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. National Register status alone doesn't stop you from renovating or selling, but it's useful for a buyer to know about, especially one weighing historic tax credits on a rehab.

Teardowns and small lots

Because there's little empty land, many buyers look at older Homewood houses as rebuild candidates. Lot width, setbacks and zoning matter as much as the house itself, so a survey or plat helps when you share details.

Common reasons Homewood owners reach out

A cottage that hasn't been touched in decades

Original kitchens, window units and old wiring are common in Edgewood and Hollywood. Buyers who renovate in Homewood expect that.

A rental near Samford

Houses rented to students or staff can wear hard. If you're tired of turnovers, tell us the lease status and condition.

Flood or drainage history

If your house sits near Shades Creek and has taken on water, disclose what happened and any insurance claims. It doesn't rule out a sale.

How selling your Homewood house works

  1. 1

    Tell us about the house

Share the address, the condition and what's going on. It takes about a minute and costs nothing.

  2. 2

    We take an honest look

We review the house and the area. We may make an offer ourselves, connect you with a trusted local buyer, or tell you listing is likely the better route.

  3. 3

    You decide

If there's an offer, it comes in writing with the price and closing terms. Take your time, compare it with listing, and say no if it isn't right.

Selling your house in Homewood: questions

Do you buy houses in every Homewood neighborhood?

We look at houses from Edgewood to West Homewood and Rosedale. We don't buy every house. Some we may buy ourselves and some we pass to a local buyer in our network.

My Homewood house is mainly worth the lot. Is that okay?

Yes. Plenty of buyers are looking for rebuild sites in Homewood, so a house in rough shape on a good lot is still worth talking about.

Would listing get me more for my Homewood home?

For a well-kept or updated house, usually yes. Our option is worth comparing when the house needs heavy work or you want a simpler sale.
