We buy houses in Bessemer, or connect you with a local buyer who will
Bessemer was founded by Henry F. DeBardeleben's Bessemer Land and Improvement Company, named for steel pioneer Henry Bessemer, and incorporated in 1887. With iron ore, coal and limestone all close by, it became a steelmaking and pipe-making town that drew workers from across the South. The old Southern Railway depot now holds the Bessemer Hall of History, and the Bright Star has been serving meals downtown since 1907.
Much of Bessemer's housing was built for mill, mine and railroad workers: small frame cottages, shotgun houses and bungalows near downtown, with brick ranches and newer subdivisions farther out toward McCalla and I-459. Older houses here often need roofs, foundation work, updated wiring and plumbing. Vacant houses and rentals with deferred maintenance are common, and a lot of them change hands as-is.
If your house is in good shape, listing it with a local agent will often get you more, and we'll say so. If it needs work, has tenants, or came to you through an estate, UglyDuck may buy it ourselves or connect you with a trusted buyer from our network who works in Jefferson County.

Selling in Bessemer: local things to know
The Bessemer Cutoff
Western Jefferson County has its own courthouse in downtown Bessemer, and locals call that district the Bessemer Cutoff. Deeds, probate matters and property taxes for houses in this part of the county are handled there rather than in downtown Birmingham. If you're dealing with an inherited house or unpaid taxes, that's the office whose records matter.
Unpaid property taxes
When Alabama property taxes go unpaid, the county can sell a tax lien, and the owner has a period to redeem it. If you've received tax sale notices on a Bessemer house, sort out the balance and the deadline before you agree to any sale, since a buyer will need it cleared at closing.
Common reasons Bessemer owners reach out
A worker's cottage that needs everything
Older frame houses near downtown often need a roof, a foundation and new systems all at once. Buyers who renovate in Bessemer are used to that.
A tired rental
If tenants have moved out or you're done with repairs, tell us whether the house is occupied and what it needs.
A family house nobody lives in
Inherited homes that have sat empty can pick up break-ins, leaks and code notices. Selling sooner can stop those costs from adding up.
How selling your Bessemer house works
- 1
Tell us about the house
Share the address, the condition and what's going on. It takes about a minute and costs nothing.
- 2
We take an honest look
We review the house and the area. We may make an offer ourselves, connect you with a trusted local buyer, or tell you listing is likely the better route.
- 3
You decide
If there's an offer, it comes in writing with the price and closing terms. Take your time, compare it with listing, and say no if it isn't right.
Selling your house in Bessemer: questions
Do you buy houses all over Bessemer?
We look at houses from downtown Bessemer out to McCalla and Hueytown. We don't buy every house. Some we may buy ourselves and some we pass to a local buyer in our network.
Can I sell a house with code violations?
Usually, yes. Share the notices you've received so a buyer can plan the repairs. Fines and liens are typically settled at closing.
Would an agent get me more for my Bessemer house?
If the house is in good shape, listing may net more. Our option is worth comparing when it needs major repairs, is vacant, or has a tenant situation you want to hand off.
